From our first step off the plane, Madrid has been a pleasant change. The clean, orderly airport was our first indication that this was going to be a good trip. The Spaniards have been amazingly friendly so far, and our Latin American Spanish hasn't been a problem. In fact, we've been able to navigate the city (including the metro and tourist attractions) surprisingly well. Knowing Spanish has definitely helped and given us more confidence to get around, but enough people speak English here that it wouldn't be a problem if we didn't know any.
It is strange being in a Spanish speaking country that is clean and orderly with actual driving rules (including respect for the pedestrian)! I think we've been in Bogota too long!
